First Superman, American Atlas, Washington Letter: Auction Preview

Offered at Swann Galleries on August 7 is this 1942 war bonds and stamps poster issued by the grocery store chain Kroger.

A fairly quiet period coming up in the auction rooms, but here are the sales I'll be keeping an eye on:

At Gray's Auctioneers in Cleveland on Wednesday, July 30, A Library of Curiosities, in 108 lots. Sharing the top estimate of $10,000–15,000 are Cook's Voyage to the Pacific Ocean (1784) with the atlas; Hakluyt's Principal Navigations (1599–1600); and John Frederick Miller's Cimelia Physica (1796). A 1797 Northampton, Mass. edition of The New-England Primer Improved is estimated at $6,000–8,000.

PBA Galleries sells 441 lots of Americana with Zamorano 80 – Travel & Exploration – Maps & Views on Thursday, July 31, with a second edition copy of Cook's Voyage to the Pacific Ocean (1785) estimated at $10,000–15,000. At the same range is a copy of Labillardière's Voyage in Search of La Pérouse (1800), with the atlas. George Vancouver's Voyage of Discovery (1798) could sell for $8,000–12,000.

On Sunday, August 3, Addison & Sarova hold an online Bookworm Auction, with 300 lots up for grabs, all sold with no reserve.

At Doyle on Thursday, August 7, 376 lots of Rare Books, Autographs & Maps, with a first edition of Henry Tanner's New American Atlas (1823) expected to lead the way at $12,000–18,000. Isaac Leeser's 1845–1846 English edition of the Pentateuch is estimated at $5,000–8,000, while a 1946 impression of Tolkien's The Hobbit could sell for $4,000–6,000.

Swann Galleries sells 311 lots of Vintage Posters on August 7, with Alphonse Mucha's 1897 advertising poster for Monaco and Monte Carlo sharing the top estimate of $15,000–20,000 with a 1942 Kroger-issued war bonds and stamps poster featuring two children in gas masks. Harry Ryle Hopps' 1917 enlistment poster "Destroy this Mad Brute" is expected to fetch $12,000–18,000.

On August 7 at PBA Galleries, The DC Universe Collection Part 6: Action Comics and More, in 143 lots. A copy of Action Comics #1 (June 1938), with the first appearance of Superman, is estimated at $400,000–600,000.

At Heritage Auctions on Friday, August 8, 416 lots in a sale of Historical Manuscripts Including Texana, at which a November 1793 George Washington letter to New York governor George Clinton is expected to sell strongly.
